It may need to be replaced, again spending colossal amounts of money.

The New Safe Confinement (NSC) at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant no longer functions as intended following the strike by a Russian drone.

This conclusion was made by Greenpeace after a visit by a special mission from the international environmental organization to the Chernobyl site.

"Head of the Chernobyl NPP and "Shelter" Object Operation Department, Artem Siry, informed the Greenpeace team that 50% of the northern roof, as well as the southern roof and side walls of the Chernobyl NPP, were damaged by a fire caused by the Russian drone attack. The roofing material and critical structures, including the crane system, have been seriously damaged. There is also a potential risk of corrosion due to the snow and water entering under the Chernobyl arch. As a result, the structure no longer functions according to the project and license," the message from Greenpeace Ukraine reads.

"Due to the high radiation level above the sarcophagus, it is highly likely that the entire Chernobyl NSC will have to be relocated by rail back to the place where it was constructed before repairs, which will incur enormous costs," Jan Vande Putte said.
