"Strong enemy": Special Operations Forces talk frankly about how the Russians fight

Special Operations Forces

July 29 is a tragic day for the Special Operations Forces.

Today is the Day of the Special Operations Forces. This branch of the military was officially established in 2016, but even before that, the current SOF units were involved in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

This is reported in a story of TSN correspondent Olena Shvorak.

In 2014, special forces soldiers went to war in half-broken trucks, in second-hand uniforms, "wooden" boots, and with old Soviet weapons. Despite this, they stopped the enemy, including retaking and holding Donetsk airport. For their superhuman endurance and combat capability, they were called "cyborgs."

Chronicles of 2014

Now, it's easier to list what the SOF doesn't have in its arsenal. The training of soldiers has also changed. Today, fighters are operators trained according to NATO standards. There has never been a shortage of volunteers to join the SOF. The selection here is strict. A young officer with the call sign "Morgan" had dreamed of this since childhood. When the Russian-Ukrainian war began, he was still in school. His first combat mission was at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

"Mining roads, the routes used by the armed forces of the Russian Federation to supply their forces and for other purposes. We went into the area, mined the roads with anti-tank mines. It was routine work done by all groups of our Special Operations Forces regiments. But since it was the first, it stood out the most," "Morgan" said.

"When the Russians first entered Ukrainian territory, there was plenty of room for the "wolves" to roam. Maximum damage was inflicted on their rear columns, aviation and artillery were directed and corrected, ambushes, sabotage and everything else was carried out. In these two years, the enemy has become smarter. They are learning too, and we must admit, they are a strong opponent," adds "Arey."

The war has changed a lot in two years, confirms "Flash," who is a full holder of the Orders for Courage and is recovering from another injury. He is confident that victory will come only through constant development and improvement.

"Our enemy, for example, has a large number of people, has great supplies, but cannot use them effectively. If they gain an advantage in this, we will also have to increase our numbers. Now we are trying to fight with fewer forces against a larger number of enemies and are using more technical means that allow us to destroy the enemy more effectively," explains "Flash."

Special Operations Forces training

Before the full-scale invasion, special forces soldiers lined up on this day to honor their fallen comrades. July 29 is a tragic day for the SOF. In 2014, during the search for pilots of downed aircraft near Latysheve in Donetsk region, two groups of special forces were ambushed and killed.
