"The organization is fundamentally broken": Pompeo commented on Russia and China's membership in the UN
Former US Secretary of State under President Donald Trump, Mike Pompeo, stated that he is not optimistic about the United Nations.
He made the statement during a visit to Kyiv on April 3rd.
The American politician participated in a discussion titled "US Support for Ukraine - What Needs to be Done and Why it is Important," according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
Pompeo stated that the organization may have made sense when it was created, but now it is "fundamentally broken."
"I am not optimistic about the United Nations. Perhaps it made sense when it was created, but we have seen how the UN Human Rights Council was controlled by Iranians. We have seen how Venezuelans, who treated women as property, were responsible for human rights in the UN alongside the Iranians who controlled the UN Human Rights Council. We see this again and again. Today, the UN will not face the fact that the Communist Party of China holds millions of Muslims in concentration camps in the western part of the country. The organization is fundamentally broken," said Mike Pompeo.
According to the former US Secretary of State, China and Russia's membership in the UN Security Council is a "relic" of the past because both countries disregard international law.
"This is a relic of the time when the Communist Party of China and Russia held two seats on the UN Security Council. They are the two countries that have no intention of adhering to international law. It is unlikely that they will comply. I think this is a mockery. If you look at the UN's mission when it was created, very noble ideas were laid out in the UN Charter. However, we can now see that this institution is broken. But I have a theory on how to move forward," Pompeo concluded.
