Currently, repair work and the development of decentralized generation are ongoing to add capacity to the power system and cover the deficit.
The situation with electricity will improve in August 2024, which is associated with the completion of repairs at some nuclear power units and a decrease in the number of facilities with guaranteed electricity supply.
This was reported by the State Inspectorate of Ukraine for Energy Supervision.
Repairs at nuclear power plant units
“To ensure the reliable operation of nuclear power plants, mandatory scheduled repairs are currently underway on energy blocks. It is worth noting that nuclear generation is the basis, providing over 50% of consumer needs even after the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP),” Head of the State Inspectorate for Energy Supervision, Ruslan Slobodyan said.
Currently, repair work and the development of decentralized generation are underway to add capacity to the power system and cover the deficit.
“Energy workers are doing everything possible to complete the work as quickly as possible. However, the situation with electricity supply is expected to be somewhat difficult in the next month and a half. Relief is expected in August,” he noted.
Critical infrastructure objects
Slobodyan also mentioned that the process of updating the list of critical infrastructure objects with guaranteed electricity supply is currently ongoing. This process will be completed by July 1.
“In many regions, dozens of consumers have already been removed from the list of guaranteed electricity supply objects, and in some regions, more than a hundred. The logic of the process is to find a balance and protect critical infrastructure objects from power outages while not creating excessive load on others,” he explained.
According to Slobodyan, the list of critical infrastructure objects with guaranteed electricity supply is proposed to be divided by seasons – into summer and winter.
“Currently, the list includes objects that are extremely important during the heating season but do not operate in the summer. Therefore, it makes sense to exclude them from the list now and return them when the cold weather begins. This is because many other consumers are connected to the power lines along with such objects and may be involved in outage schedules,” he noted.
Additionally, in cases where it is not possible to connect objects to different power lines, the possibility of manual switching in case of outage schedules is being considered.
“Unfortunately, not all our networks are fully automated today, and not all parts of the network can be turned on and off remotely. Sometimes it is necessary to go to a distribution point and turn off a part of the line on-site. This, of course, requires additional efforts from distribution system operators,” he pointed out.
