Widespread power outages on Thursday, November 19, were linked to a forced reduction in electricity generation at three Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Russian airstrikes damaged transmission lines carrying electricity from the plants.
This was reported by DTEK.
In their statement, energy officials stressed that electricity generated at nuclear power plants cannot be delivered to consumers.
Due to damage to the grid, three Ukrainian nuclear power plants were forced to reduce output. The Khmelnytskyi and Rivne plants had already lowered generation at the start of November, and after the latest attack on November 19, both lost another high-voltage line, DTEK explained.
The South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant also lost part of its external connection.
«In total, four of nine reactors are currently operating at reduced capacity», DTEK noted.
Colder weather has driven up electricity use, adding to the forced blackouts.
«Energy workers are operating nonstop, but every fresh strike worsens the crisis, ” DTEK said, reminding that on November 19 Russian attacks targeted Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions.
