Easter silence? Ukraine’s MFA weighs chances for ceasefire with Russia

A ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia for the Easter holidays remains a possibility, though skepticism regarding Kremlin promises remains high. Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has issued a cautious statement.

Easter truce

While Russia has signaled its intent to observe an Easter truce, Ukraine is bracing for a potential breach. Following these developments, the MFA released a formal statement on the holiday prospects.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha noted that this year's truce "has a chance," while detailing Kyiv's stance toward the Russian side.

The outlook for peace: MFA statement

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed that the proposal for an Easter ceasefire, initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, remains viable.

"Ukrainians deserve a holiday free from terror. We will monitor when and where the “silence” takes effect and will mirror the response," Sybiha stated.

The Minister expressed hope that a sustained cessation of hostilities could pave the way for genuine diplomacy and a definitive end to Russia's war against Ukraine.

The MFA maintains that a ceasefire is the proper strategy to advance diplomatic efforts—not only in the context of Ukraine and Russia but also for the Middle East.
