Attack on Odesa: New details emerge about 36-year-old man killed

Russia twice struck densely built-up areas of Odesa with drones. A 36-year-old man was killed, while a gas pipeline and cars were damaged. TSN reported from the scene on the aftermath of the strike.

The aftermath of the attack on Odesa

Odesa came under fire again overnight as Russian forces launched two drone attacks targeting residential districts. About 15 "Shahed" drones penetrated air defenses: some were shot down over the sea, but several struck a densely populated area. One man was killed and two people were injured. Electricity, gas and heating supplies were disrupted in high-rise buildings.

TSN correspondent Serhii Osadchuk reported from the impact site.

Security guard failed to reach shelter

The main strike hit a lane with several residential high-rise buildings. After the air raid alert sounded, most residents moved to underground parking areas, which helped save lives. One drone exploded near a newly built residential building.

A 36-year-old security guard was there at the time. He did not go to shelter and sustained critical injuries. Rescuers who arrived at the scene fought for his life until the last moment.

“Despite resuscitation efforts, unfortunately, the 36-year-old man could not be saved and died. We also know about two other injured people. More than 50 rescuers were involved in dealing with the aftermath of the attack,” said Marina Averina, spokesperson for the regional State Emergency Service.

"Only the car frame remained"

The blast wave and debris caused significant damage in the courtyard of the complex. One drone hit the roof of a building, causing a fire. Another pierced a gas pipeline with debris. A gas leak occurred and flames broke out, quickly spreading to nearby parked cars.

A resident, Andrii, found his car completely burned out in the morning.

Andrii, local resident: “Debris hit the cars and the building. A "Shahed" also struck the roof. Gas supply is now disrupted, the boiler house is not working, and there is absolutely no heating in the buildings. As for the car, the next step is filing a report with law enforcement and contacting the city authorities, since standard CASCO insurance does not cover war risks.”

Odesa unites: support from other districts

Despite the shock and shattered windows, Odesa residents are showing remarkable unity. Already in the morning, people from other districts of the city began arriving at the damaged residential complex simply to support those affected.

Kateryna, Odesa resident: “Of course, this really brings people together. I came from Kotovskyi settlement, I feel very sorry for these people. I collected some money and opened a small donation jar to help them in some way.”

Current situation

An operational headquarters has been set up by the city authorities at the site. Specialists are documenting the damage: in addition to apartments, glazing at a nearby fitness center and a household goods shop was smashed. Utility workers are trying to restore communications as quickly as possible, as residents have been left without basic amenities in the middle of winter.
