The buffer zone between Russia and Ukraine, mentioned by Russian president Vladimir Putin on May 22, can only be located on the territory of the aggressor state.

This was said by Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi while commenting on the Russian president’s statements.

«A buffer zone can exist on Russian territory, and it is precisely for this purpose that Ukraine has been conducting the Kursk operation there since last year, ” he noted.

The spokesperson for Ukraine’s foreign policy agency called Putin’s statements about the need to create a «buffer zone» on Ukrainian territory «highly revealing» at a time when the United States, European partners, and Ukraine are calling for a complete and lasting ceasefire for 30 days or more.

«These words clearly demonstrate that it is Putin, it is Russia, that is the obstacle to peace efforts now, and it is on them that pressure must be intensified to force Putin and Russia toward peace, toward a complete and lasting ceasefire, ” Tykhyi stated.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, in his post on the X platform, also emphasized that the new aggressive statements by the Russian president «clearly reject peace efforts and show that Putin was and remains the sole reason for the continuation of killings.»

«More pressure must be put on him [Russian president Vladimir Putin] to end this war, ” the Ukrainian minister wrote.

It was previously reported that Russian president Vladimir Putin announced a decision to create a so-called «security buffer zone» along the Ukrainian-Russian border. Later, Russian propagandists clarified that this refers to Ukrainian regions bordering Russia in the northeast—Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv.
