The idea of establishing a demilitarised zone in Ukraine and introducing international management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is seen as unrealistic.

According to the proposal, the plans fail to reflect the realities of the war and the security risks close to the frontline.

Executive Director of the Economic Discussion Club, Oleh Pendzin said this in comments to 24 Kanal.

In particular, the U.S. side proposes that the Zaporizhzhia plant operate under its oversight and supply electricity to both sides of the contact line, as well as the possible deployment of artificial intelligence data centres on Ukrainian territory near the facility.

Why this scenario for the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is unrealistic

According to the expert, these ideas are largely unfeasible. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is fully integrated into Ukraine’s power grid, and restarting and operating it is possible only with Ukrainian staff who have detailed knowledge of the facility’s technical characteristics.

Moreover, large international investors are unwilling to invest in infrastructure near a combat zone, as business risks close to the frontline remain extremely high.

Demilitarised zone raises questions over security control

The concept of a demilitarised zone itself has prompted questions, as it is unclear why the proposal applies only to Ukrainian-controlled territory and not the entire contact line.

The expert cautions that without clear monitoring mechanisms the zone could become a dangerous «grey zone». It also remains uncertain who would be responsible for guaranteeing security — Ukraine, the EU, or an international peacekeeping force.

Is a swift peace realistic

Executive Director of the Economic Discussion Club, Oleh Pendzin says claims about a quick end to the war amount largely to political rhetoric, noting that there is no indication Russia is prepared for genuine compromises.

According to the expert, China is the only country capable of stopping the war within 24 hours, due to Russia’s total economic dependence on Beijing.

He emphasises that Russia’s economy has effectively lost its sovereignty and relies on Chinese supplies. A decision by China’s leadership to suspend exports of dual-use goods, as well as military and nuclear-related products, could rapidly halt hostilities.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities have openly stated that China has an interest in the continuation of the war, as the current state of affairs serves its strategic interests.
