The ceasefire must be complete and unconditional, have a clear timeframe, and its compliance should be overseen by the United States and possibly a European country. These steps should contribute to ending the war.

This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a conversation with journalists.

According to him, a complete and unconditional ceasefire would be easier to monitor, considering the Russians’ attempts to derail the process.

“The Americans should be responsible for oversight. And if they want to share responsibility, they can divide the responsibility, focus, and control over the implementation of the full ceasefire regime with one or another European country. For example, Britain or France, whose leaders were chosen as Europe’s representatives at the last meeting in Paris,” the Ukrainian President noted.

Zelenskyy added that time limits on the ceasefire regime, such as 30 days, would provide opportunities to pressure Russia.

“If the ceasefire is for an indefinite period, it becomes a frozen conflict. But if there are specific deadlines, it doesn’t mean everything has to be done or can be done within the first term. There could be an extension, but it’s important that there’s a timeframe for which all parties — mediators and warring sides — must be accountable,” he emphasized.

As President Zelenskyy noted, in such a situation, it would be possible to draw up a plan of what needs to be accomplished within that timeframe and carry it out.

“I believe these are the right steps. They encourage action toward ending the war,” he concluded.
