Citizens of 48 countries who fought on the side of Russian forces are currently being held in captivity in Ukraine.
This was reported by Dmytro Usov, Secretary of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, according to Interfax-Ukraine.
«As of today, we have citizens from 48 countries in captivity. It’s hundreds of people — not just dozens, ” Usov said.
The top seven countries whose citizens are most represented are:
Tajikistan;
Uzbekistan;
Belarus;
Kazakhstan;
Azerbaijan;
Nepal;
Kyrgyzstan.
According to the general, the number of foreign fighters being captured while fighting on Russia’s side is increasing. Usov also says that more than 28,000 individuals who joined the Russian army to fight against Ukraine have now been identified.
«We are now at 28,391 — and the number is growing. I want to stress that this figure includes only those we have directly identified, with specific personal data such as names and citizenship, ” he said.
Intelligence data indicates that 136 countries are represented within the Russian armed forces.
«This count excludes the regular North Korean army, which is represented by 14,000 troops,» Usov clarified.
According to Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence, at least 5,149 foreign nationals have been killed in the war against Ukraine.
