Ukraine has announced the suspension of its obligations under the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called this the next step after withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention.

Ukraine is halting the implementation of its commitments under the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE).

This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following a meeting of the heads of Ukraine’s foreign diplomatic missions.

The ministry explained that this decision was a logical continuation of steps aimed at strengthening national security. It is part of Ukraine’s consistent adaptation of its defense policy to the conditions of full-scale war with Russia.

«This is the next step to strengthen Ukraine following the suspension of the Ottawa Convention, ” the MFA’s statement reads.

The CFE is an international treaty that sets limits on the number of heavy weapons — including tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, combat aircraft, and attack helicopters — that a state may possess.

This document has lost relevance in the European security architecture since Russia’s aggression. Russia suspended its participation in the treaty back in 2007 and officially withdrew from it in 2023.
