Russian forces struck the Pechenihy Reservoir dam on December 7 because it is vital for Kharkiv, supplying the city with water.
This was stated by Army General and former Chief of Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Mykola Malomuzh, as reported by 24 Kanal.
According to him, even though Russia aims to complete its offensive along the Pokrovske–Myrhorod axis and advance toward Kostiantynivka, Kreminna, and Sloviansk, it has not forgotten Kharkiv region. In particular, the occupiers continue their attacks in Vovchansk and Kupiansk.
«Striking the dam is a way to create conditions that make life in Kharkiv harder, to put people under pressure. This is added to the constant drone and guided aerial bomb strikes on the energy infrastructure. Russia wants to make life unbearable in the city, which is a major agglomeration crucial for our defense, ” explained the general.
Malomuzh explains that, according to the Russians, strikes on the dam are supposed to help them gain new positions in Vovchansk and advance further in Kharkiv region.
