Attack on Ukraine on Christmas: everything about the strikes, hits and consequences

As noted by the Center for Countering Disinformation, the Russians did everything to leave Ukrainians without electricity, gas, heat, and water.

The Russian army launched an attack on Ukraine on Christmas with missiles and drones. The target of the enemy strikes was again the energy sector. Explosions were heard in various parts of the country.

Initially, during the night, the Russian occupiers launched "'Shahed" kamikaze drones at Ukraine. The Air Force reported that the enemy UAVs were attacking the country from the north, east, and south. At the same time, strategic aviation Tu-95 aircraft took off in Russia, from which the enemy launched missiles at Ukraine.

Throughout the night and in the morning, explosions were heard in various parts of Ukraine, and the air defense system was operating.

Attack on Kharkiv

A series of explosions rang out in Kharkiv. The enemy carried out at least seven strikes on the city, Head of the Regional Military Administration, Oleh Synehubov reported.

"We recorded hits in the Saltivskyi, Kyivskyi and Nemishlianskyi districts. At this time, there are six injured. Several fires broke out in non-residential buildings, and rescuers continue to eliminate the consequences of the enemy's attacks," the statement said.

At the same time, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that a fire broke out at the impact site in the Kyivskyi district, and the glazing of surrounding buildings was damaged. In the Nemishlianskyi district, a strike hit a private house.

Later, Terekhov also reported a "Shahed" strike. A fire broke out in a one-story house at the impact site of in the private sector of the Osnovianskyi district. Information about the injured is being clarified.

"The enemy launched 12 missiles at the city, all of them were aimed at our boiler houses, our CHP plants and electricity facilities," the mayor said.

Special power outage schedules were introduced in Kharkiv. As a result of the strike on heat energy facilities, a significant part of the city was left without heating.

Attack on Ivano-Frankivsk region

During the morning air raid alert, the enemy also struck Ivano-Frankivsk region, Head of the Regional Military Administration, Svitlana Onishchuk reported. As a result, part of the region was left without electricity. Relevant services are working to eliminate the consequences. There were no casualties.

Strike on Vinnytsia region

In Vinnytsia region, there were damages as a result of the attack, First Deputy Head of the Regional Military Administration, Natalia Zabolotna reported.

"As of the morning, thanks to the coordinated work of energy workers, all consumers have been reconnected. Thanks to all the services for their promptness," Zabolotna noted.

Attack on Kyiv region

The Russians attacked Kyiv region with drones. The air raid alert lasted all night. Air defense forces were operating in the region, and enemy targets were shot down. There were no casualties or hits on critical or residential infrastructure.

"As a result of falling debris from the downed enemy targets in two districts, 12 trucks, a cafe building, and three private houses were damaged. Windows, doors were shattered, facades were torn, and roofs were damaged. Homeowners will receive all necessary assistance in restoring their properties," Head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Ruslan Kravchenko said.

Attack on Dnipropetrovsk region

In the morning, the Russian army carried out a massive attack on Dnipropetrovsk region in an attempt to destroy the region’s energy system. This was reported by Head of the Regional Military Administration, Serhiy Lysak.

"As a result of the missile strike on energy facilities in the region, one person was killed. My condolences to the family and loved ones," the statement said.

In addition to infrastructure, an administrative building was damaged in Dnipro. Windows were broken in a nine-story building. A private house was also damaged. A utility building was on fire. Representatives of all services and volunteers are working at the site, providing necessary materials to temporarily cover the damage.

Strike on Kirovohrad region

The occupiers attacked critical infrastructure in Kirovohrad region, Head of the Regional Military Administration, Andriy Raikovych reported. There are consequences in some communities. A gas pipeline near a private house caught fire. Windows in buildings were also damaged.

At the same time, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that in Kirovohrad region, as a result of falling debris from an enemy air target, a fire broke out in a warehouse building. The roof, internal wall and ceiling finishing of the building, with an area of 100 square meters, were on fire. Firefighters have localized the fire, and efforts to extinguish it continue. There were no killed or injured.

Damage  in Zhytomyr region

During the night, as a result of the attack, a wooden abandoned building in Zhytomyr district was damaged, and a shed caught fire. Head of the Regional Military Administration, Vitaliy Bunechko reported that the fire was extinguished within 30 minutes thanks to the professional actions of the State Emergency Service workers. There were no killed or injured.

Situation in Cherkasy region

Head of the Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, Ihor Taburets, reported that defenders in the region destroyed two "Shaheds." There were no consequences.

"However, the situation in the country's energy system after the shelling is extremely difficult. Shutdown schedules have been applied. I will inform you about any changes," Taburets noted.

Emergency power outages in Rivne region

In Rivne region, the air raid alert lasted for nearly three hours in the morning. No damage or destruction of infrastructure was recorded, Head of the Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Koval reported.

"However, due to the massive attack on the country's energy sector, emergency power outages occurred for some subscribers in Rivne region, including in the Zdolbuniv, Ostroh and Klevan communities. Energy workers are currently working to restore electricity supply to residents' homes," Koval wrote on social media.

Attack on Poltava region

Russian invaders struck Poltava region. There was damage to energy infrastructure and temporary power outages in Kremenchuk district. Head of the Regional Military Administration, Filip Pronin, reported that specialists were already working on restoration.

Russia attacked energy facilities

Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko reported that the Ukrainian energy system was once again under a massive attack.

"The transmission system operator is taking necessary measures to limit consumption in order to minimize the negative impact on the energy system. As soon as the security situation allows, energy workers will assess the damages," the minister wrote on social media.

In particular, DTEK thermal power stations were under attack, and the equipment at the TPPs was seriously damaged. After the shelling stopped, energy workers began promptly working to eliminate the consequences and restore equipment operations.

"This year, this is already the thirteenth massive attack on Ukraine's energy sector and the tenth massive attack on the company's energy facilities," DTEK noted.

Commenting on the enemy's attack, Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, Andriy Kovalenko, noted that the Russians "did everything to leave Ukrainians without light, gas, heat, and water."

Power outages

"Ukrenergo" announced that due to the massive missile attack, measures to limit consumption had been applied.

"Check the disconnection schedules for your region on the website and official pages of your regional power supply company," the company stated.

Later, "Ukrenergo" reported that hourly power outages would continue until the end of the day. They urged people not to turn on several powerful electrical devices simultaneously when power is restored according to the schedule.

Heating disruptions

Due to the attack, there were disruptions in heating in some regions, reported Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction and Minister for Communities and Territories Development, Oleksiy Kubela.

In Kharkiv region, 500,000 subscribers are left without heating, affecting 2,677 buildings. In Dnipropetrovsk region, 55 houses in Dnipro and 100 houses in Zelenodolsk are without heating. 81 residential buildings are without heating in Ivano-Frankivsk region.

Specialists are working to restore heating as soon as possible.

Zelenskyy's response to the attack

Commenting on the massive attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that each Russian massive strike required preparation time. It is never a spontaneous decision but a conscious choice of targets, timing, and date.

"Today, Putin consciously chose Christmas for the attack. What could be more inhumane? Over 70 missiles, including ballistic ones, and more than a hundred strike drones. The targets are our energy infrastructure. They continue to fight for a blackout in Ukraine," the President said.

According to preliminary data, Ukrainian defenders shot down over 50 missiles and a significant portion of the drones. Unfortunately, there were hits, and in several regions and power outages occurred. The President emphasized that energy workers are working to restore power as soon as possible.
