War Contributes to Climate Change: Ukrainians Are Warned About Potential Acid Rains

The war in Ukraine unleashed by Russian may cause acid rains.

Ukraine may face the acid rains, if the Russian troops attack an oil depot or a chemical industrial facility, Yevheniia Zasiadko, the Head of Climate Department at Ecoaction Civil Organization, said in her interview for UNIAN.

"I don’t think that the strikes may directly cause them (the acid rains – ed.). However, if a Russian missile hits an oil deport or an industrial chemical facility in Uktraine, this indeed may result in the acid rains”, she warned.

According to Zasiadko, in this context it is also reasonable to consider a risk of river pollution.

"For example, recently I’ve seen the news about a shot-down Russian helicopter found in the river in Kyiv area. River pollution directly affects the water quality... It is clear that the war definitely contributes to the climate change. Military vehicles constantly moving around burn much more fuel than normal civilian cars. This promotes the atmosphere contamination with greenhouse gases”, the climate researcher added.
