Is Putin ready to end war? Zelenskyy outlines possible options
The Ukrainian leader suggests that U.S. President Donald Trump, who is holding talks with Putin, could indeed stop the war.
Russia’s war against Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that Russian president Vladimir Putin is not ready to end the war, but hopes that U.S. President Donald Trump will convince the Kremlin leader.
He said this while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
“I am not sure that Putin wants to end this war in the situation he is in now, with losses and without achieving the goals he wanted to achieve at the beginning of this war. He does not really want the war to end. But their economy is very tired and their army is very tired,” the Ukrainian leader stressed.
Zelenskyy said the Russian army is losing 35,000 soldiers killed each month and added that the figure would continue to grow.
“These are significant losses. It depends on Russia whether to continue the war or not. But we want to stop this war,” the Ukrainian president said.
According to him, U.S. President Donald Trump, who is in dialogue with Putin, could indeed bring the war to an end.
“He [Trump] is holding dialogue with Putin on an equal footing… Perhaps they want to find compromises. We are open to different steps,” the Ukrainian president added.
At the same time, Zelenskyy said that compromises for the sake of peace must be made by both sides.
“Russians will not win this war. They have not won and they will not win,” he concluded.
