Can Russia plunge Ukraine into total darkness? MP comments blackout risks
A large-scale power collapse, the kind Russia seeks to trigger, will not happen.
Power outages
Despite ongoing attacks by the Russian military on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, no catastrophic collapse of the power system is expected, and total blackouts are unlikely.
This was stated by Serhii Nahorniak, a member of parliament from the Servant of the People party, during an appearance on Ranok.LIVE.
According to him, the key transmission system nodes operated by Ukrenergo are now protected from both missile strikes and drone attacks. Ukraine’s air defense system has also become far more effective compared to 2022.
“We have built a significant number of protective structures that make it impossible to split Ukraine’s grid or restrict the transmission of electricity from nuclear power plants to different regions,” the MP emphasizes.
Nahorniak says that short-term outages may occur after attacks, but they will not lead to the large-scale energy collapse Russia hopes for.
“We must be prepared for power cuts, but after them, energy workers will restore supply,” he says.
