Moscow's new weapon: Expert reveals Russia's strike on Mykolaiv

Russia hit Mykolaiv with guided aerial bombs reaching a range of 150 kilometres. Serhiy Bratchuk spoke about a new threat and the ongoing development of Ukrainian interceptors.

Guided aerial bombs

Russian forces hammered Mykolaiv with guided aerial bombs. For the first time since the start of the war, such weapons reached the outskirts of Mykolaiv on 16 October 2025.

Speaking on 24 Kanal, Serhiy Bratchuk, spokesman for the Ukrainian Volunteer Army «South, ” said there have been conflicting comments about the strike.

Some reports describe it as a guided aerial bomb, though the exact type of munition has not yet been identified.

What Russia used to attack Mykolaiv

According to Bratchuk, there are suggestions that Russian forces used a modified Hrim-E1 munition.

«The flight range is between 120 and 150 kilometres, with a fairly high altitude, ” he said. „Experts are still determining the exact type of munition. The situation doesn’t look good, but the frequency of guided bombs use remains low.“

Bratchuk suggested that by launching such weapons, Russia may be experimenting with modified versions of its existing munitions.

Moreover, Ukrainian military engineers, alongside other experts and international partners, are on the verge of completing interceptors designed to counter guided bombs.

Bratchuk underscored the immense technical complexity of this endeavour. Nevertheless, the work is encouraging and gives hope, because the occupiers are constantly improving, so Ukraine must seek effective countermeasures.

Ukrainians are actively working on this: a year ago talks of intercepting guided bombs sounded unreal, but now the situation could change fundamentally.
