"Like Clockwork": Invaders Shell Mykolaiv Region and Burn Down Wheat Fields According to the Schedule
Hundreds of wheat field hectares are under the fire of Russian artillery, as the enemy deliberately burns Ukrainian harvests in Mykolaiv Region.
The engines of the harvesters are shut down, since no farming vehicle can go the fields barraged by the hail of Russian shells. Locals staying in their home villages survive on the humanitarian rations and congratulate each other every morning with making it through the night.
Serhii lives in a house in the middle of wilderness with his dog, gooses and few little goats under never-ending Russian shellfire. “They start looking for a shelter as soon as they hear the noise. I don’t really know where to hide, but they usually hide in the shed”, the man says.
The village is often barraged by Russian shells, mortar rounds and Grad rockets. The outskirts, which are now almost completely ruined, usually suffer the most. “They usually start to fire between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. Then they go silent for few hours and start again at around 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. In the afternoon, it’s almost quiet here, and then they start again in the evening. Everything is right on time”, the locals say.
Ms. Tetiana, a former local paramedic, managed to huddle herself up in a corner during the shelling, and this saved her life. The enemy mortar shells landed right on her yard and hit her house. The explosion damaged the roof and pulled down the fence.
Her neighbor once moved away with her old mother, but later returned home. Now they both are surviving in this small frontline village under the enemy fire. The war is felt in the air here, and every new day brings more and more destruction and damage.
Slava is a local tractor driver. He refused to evacuate, because he just couldn’t leave alone his senior neighbors. “Why don’t I leave? Well, I have my house here, my farm, my neighbors who are totally helpless because of their age. Without me, they couldn’t even fill up a gas cylinder or go buy some batteries in the town. They need me here”, the man says.
When the Russian shells recently caused a fire at the wheat field, Slava was plowing on his tractor. The man was risking his life to save the fellow villagers from hunger. Every morning when he goes to the field, he’s never sure whether we would return home in the evening. “It’s 100% dangerous. We don’t know what’s in the ground, or what may fall from the skies”, he explains.
The man is very upset about the wheat spiking up in the nearby field unharvested. “What could be bread will stay in the ground”, Slava says with sorrow.
The Russians barrage this village 24/7 causing much suffering for local civilians. The enemy shells hit a dome of local church, but the building withstood the explosion. Now, this sacred place is mangled by the Russian deadly metal scrap.
“We are Ukrainians, we are hard-working people, we always try to do something to make our lives better, brush up our yards, gardens, houses. When they come here, they are always surprised about how we live. They cannot believe that we have neat and tidy homes with bathrooms, toilets, boilers and hot water. That’s the reason why the want to destroy everything”, the locals complain.
The empty village is flooded with grass. Cherry trees are read with ripe berries, but there is no one to pick them up. Those who stay here survive only thanks to the volunteers and humanitarian rations. The volunteers deliver here essential supplies despite close proximity to the frontline. During the periods of silence, the locals are working in the gardens, but immediately rush to shelters as soon as they hear the roar of Russian guns. Still, even those rare hours spent outdoors under the sun are enough to make them feel good, they say.
