Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that Russia started the war because of its desire for global power, as it was during the Soviet or imperial rule.
He made this statement during his address at the European Political Community summit in Budapest.
"Russia started this war not because it needed more territory. Russia has more land than anyone. It wanted global power, first control over Ukraine, and then over all of you, as it was during the Soviet or imperial rule," Zelenskyy said.
He pointed out that Budapest remembers what Soviet tanks looked like. And Ukrainian cities will not forget Russian bombs.
"Just like Budapest, every city in Ukraine and all our countries deserve security and peace," the President added.
