Planned Evacuation from Mariupol Failed: Russian Troops Opened Fire at Refugee Assembly Point

Iryna Vereshchuk, the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories, reported that evacuation from Mariupol scheduled on April 21st failed due to the enemy shelling in the area of the planned “green route”.

Nevertheless, Vereshchuk reassured the Mariupol residents that the Ukrainian government would persevere in its attempts to rescue them from the besieged city.

“Unfortunately, we do not have any good news regarding Mariupol. We are facing great challenges there. The Russian side creates much difficulties and is chaotic, slow and dishonest in fulfillment of its obligations”, Vereshchuk reported on April 21st.

Although, the expressed moderate hope based on the fact that on April 20th, the Ukrainian government first managed to arrange direct evacuation of civilians from Mariupol to Zaporizhzhia (i.e. the four evacuation buses let out of the besieged city yesterday).

"We are sorry for those Mariupol residents who waited in vain today for evacuation transport. Because of enemy shelling in the refugee assembly point, we were forced to close the “green route”. Dear citizens of Mariupol, please, remember: as long as we have any available options, we will persevere in its attempts to get you out of there! Hold on!”, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
