Security agreements signed with partner countries cannot replace Ukraine's NATO membership but instead help bring it closer to the Alliance.
UK Ambassador to Ukraine, Martin Harris, stated this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
“It’s also written in our security agreement with Ukraine that this agreement is on the path to NATO membership. It is not an alternative to NATO. I believe the guarantee Ukraine needs is Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty,” Harris says
He notes that the implementation of the security agreement allows the UK to be confident that it will accelerate Ukraine’s accession to NATO. The ambassador also emphasizes that the agreement ensures long-term support for Ukraine from the United Kingdom.
“And right now, we’re the first country to fully fund this effort. It’s also our current position that we will provide £3 billion annually to support Ukraine until 2030 or as long as necessary. Through this agreement, we also have financial resources to ensure our cooperation, strengthen the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and provide all the capabilities important for Ukraine’s future integration into NATO,” Harris added.
According to the British ambassador, “this is a real plan with financing and an agreement that currently benefits Ukraine.”
