Most UN Security Council members support an investigation by the organization's experts into Russia's use of Iranian kamikaze drones against Ukrainian civilians.
The proposal was considered on Wednesday at the UN Security Council Meeting convened at the request of Russia, Ukrinform reports.
Some members of the Security Council initiated an investigation by UN experts into Russia's use of drones in its aggressive war against Ukraine. In particular, the investigation would concern strikes against civilians and civilian infrastructure, which are qualified as war crimes.
Iran, which supplies Russia with its drones for its criminal activities, violates UN Security Council Resolution 2231 dated July 20th, 2015. Paragraph 4 of the document states that deliveries of such weapons require the approval of the UN Security Council.
The drone models used by Russia to kill Ukrainian civilians fall under the category of prohibited weapons, as their range exceeds 300 kilometers. In addition, the Mohajer drones are manufactured by Qods Aviation, which is blacklisted by the UN.
For their part, representatives of the Russian delegation argued that the UN should not conduct an investigation at the request of other members of the organization.
Russian representative Vasiliy Nebenzya claimed that the information about the Iranian drones was a fake, so he saw no legal grounds for an investigation. Nebenzya also said that Russia would block the investigation by using its veto power in the UN Security Council.
The Chinese representatives said that UN members should continue negotiations on a possible investigation into the origin of the drones that Russia was using in the war against Ukraine.
"Given the obvious differences of opinions, the members should continue consultations to determine how the Secretariat should carry out its mandate. It is necessary to refrain from hasty actions that would undermine the unity of the Council," the Chinese deputy ambassador said.
