The United States’ readiness to take part in security guarantees for Ukraine is a historic decision.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this while summing up the meeting of the “coalition of the willing” in Brussels on August 17, ahead of his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.
“Security guarantees as a result of our joint work must be truly very practical and provide protection on land, in the air, and at sea, and they must also be developed with Europe’s participation,” the Ukrainian leader stressed.
Zelenskyy noted that at today’s meeting, the coordination of common positions of Ukraine’s European partners took place regarding clear support for its independence and sovereignty.
“Everyone agrees that state borders must not be changed by force. Everyone supports that key issues must be resolved with Ukraine’s participation in a trilateral format: Ukraine, the U.S., the Russian leader,” he said.
The Ukrainian President also said that the meeting worked on a shared view of what a peace agreement should be. According to him, it must be “truly fair, swift, and one that will work.”
