Ukrainian territories over which the war is being fought are not a “patch of land,” but have strategic importance for defense and are home to hundreds of thousands of people. Any assessment of the conflict as a “trade over a few kilometers” indicates a misunderstanding of the real value of these lands.

This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy while commenting on remarks by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance regarding possible territorial concessions.

The essence of the territorial issue

The president called on international partners to more objectively assess the scale and significance of Ukrainian regions that are under threat or occupation. These territories are strategically important defensive lines and home to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens.

“There needs to be a clearer understanding of what is meant by a "patch" and what Ukraine’s territory really represents,” Zelenskyy said.

He stressed that every liberated or defended area serves as a fortified position, and losing it would directly open the way for further enemy advances.

Zelenskyy also warned that Russia sees the seizure of Ukrainian land not as a symbolic win, but as a stepping stone for further aggression. According to him, occupied territories serve as a launchpad for deeper offensives into Ukraine.
