In preparation for this and the next winter, Ukraine must urgently begin constructing distributed generation facilities. Dispersing small power plants will make the Ukrainian energy system more resilient to Russian attacks.

Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, Chairman of the Management Board of NEC "Ukrenergo," stated this at the "War and Energy: How It Affects Business" forum.

According to him, Ukraine should request additional air defense systems to protect what is being restored. Additionally, new generating capacities need to be deployed to ensure that if the Russians launch attacks again, they cannot concentrate on 10 or 15 large power plants but will have to deal with a large number of small ones.

"This brings us to the issue of decentralizing generation. And this needs to be done not after the victory, not after the war, but right now. We need to start right now," Volodymyr Kudrytskyi said.

The head of "Ukrenergo" also reminded that, overall, as a result of the last seven Russian attacks on energy facilities, Ukraine had lost about 9 gigawatts of generating capacity. This is equivalent to the energy consumption of the Netherlands for three months or the combined consumption of Slovakia and the Baltic countries.
