Lukashenko may receive an arrest warrant following Putin - Podolyak

The European Parliament has equated the self-proclaimed Belarusian president Oleksandr Lukashenko with the Russian dictator Volodymyr Putin as parties involved in the war against Ukraine. Now, a call has been made for the EU to find legal avenues to freeze the assets of the Belarusian leadership and transfer them for Ukraine's recovery, as well as to issue Lukashenko an international arrest warrant similar to Putin's.

This was revealed by Advisor to the Presidential Office, Mykhailo Podolyak, in an interview with "24 Chnnel".

Podolyak notes that these are very important decisions by the European Parliament.

"It is a political fixation of Lukashenko's status. We remember that before the 2020 elections, certain political institutions, including European ones, flirted with Lukashenko, giving him the opportunity to feel like someone who sits on two chairs, takes something from Russia, negotiates with Europe, and so on," emphasized the Presidential Office Advisor.

However, there are currently no legal decisions on this matter.

"And the political aspect is extremely important, because it confirms that Lukashenko is firmly attached to Putin and the genocidal type of war. And despite everything, Lukashenko will be equally responsible for everything that Russia is doing in Ukraine today," Podolyak says.

He continues that it is now necessary to observe whether there will be any legal fixation of this decision for Belarus from the point of view of, for example, the ICC warrant.

"First, they have a certain political consensus. We see it today. After that, they begin discussions at various levels on how to translate this political consensus into specific legal actions. Following this, several packages will be developed – some more stringent, more radical, less stringent, and so on," summarized Podolyak.
