Russia changes the tactics for strikes on Kyiv: an expert outlines the main scenario

According to an analyst, Putin's army directs "Shaheds" at Kyiv to "exhaust" air defense systems.

Drone strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region are likely to continue, not only in the near term but possibly until the war ends or until Ukrainian Defense Forces destroy the factories producing these UAVs. Military expert Roman Svitan shared this view in a comment for TSN.ua.

According to Svitan, Putin's army attacks with "Shaheds," including during the day, for a specific reason.

"Currently, the weather is cloudy, so when a "Shahed" flies in the clouds, it cannot be intercepted by mobile groups, only by aviation. Additionally, if a "Shahed" flies during the day rather than at night, there is less risk of icing on the drone. This is why the Russians are being forced to adjust their tactics," Svitan explains.

When asked why "Shahed" attacks on Kyiv and its region have recently intensified, the military expert responded: "The "Shaheds" are now being used to "exhaust" the air defense system. Putin's army is trying to make us use more missiles and interceptors. They are sending UAVs to areas with stronger air defense, such as the Kyiv region."

According to Svitan, it's also important to consider that decoy aerial targets accompany the "Shaheds."

"Half are "Shaheds," and half are decoy targets. This strategy aims to make us expend as many interceptors, mobile fire groups, and aircraft resources as possible. This is called "exhausting" the air defense to pave the way for subsequent missile strikes. They are counting on Kyiv being well-protected with dense air defense coverage," Svitan says.

He adds: "The situation with "Shaheds" targeting Kyiv will persist. These drones will continue to "terrorize" because production levels are quite significant - over a hundred per day. They will keep attacking until we receive Tomahawk missiles and destroy the factories producing these drones. Furthermore, the attacks could be mitigated by deploying mobile fire groups along the borders to prevent "Shaheds" from entering Ukrainian airspace. These drones can also be intercepted using light aircraft."
