Ukraine will be threatened with a protracted blackout: an expert raised an alarming forecast

Ukrainian nuclear power plants are at risk due to Russian airstrikes. If Russian forces target nuclear reactors, it could halt the operation of Ukraine's nuclear facilities.

Attack on an energy facility.

This concern was raised by energy expert and co-founder of the Institute of Energy Strategies, Yuriy Korolchuk, in an interview with "Glavred".

"Even if a couple of missiles will be launched at a cooling tower, causing only partial structural damage, the station would have to be shut down until all circumstances and the extent of the damage are clarified. This alone would lead to power outages," the expert explained.

If two nuclear plants are incapacitated, Ukrainians could face a blackout. Korolchuk states that theoretically and practically, repairs might take one to two weeks" following such strikes. And during this time outages would likely occur.

According to Korolchuk, it would be difficult to supply all consumers with power without nuclear plants. In the event of damage to nuclear reactors, electricity would be rationed strictly, with priority given to essential infrastructure facilities.
