Why Crimea is easier to liberate than other territories — an expert's explanation

Thousands of tons of ammunition, including heavy concrete-piercing bombs, will be needed to de-occupy Donbas.

Military expert Petro Chernyk said this in an exclusive interview with TSN.ua.

He commented on the difference.

"Donbas has never been taken by anyone. During the First World War, the Soviet army could not knock out the White army from there. This is a reality. In fact, it is just a colossal urban development. The enemy cannot take small Bakhmut, despite the fact that he does not spare its military personnel. Since 2014, a very serious line of defense has been built there, and it will be incredibly difficult to break through it," Chernyk said.

According to him, for the deoccupation of Donbas, thousands of tons of ammunition are needed, even heavy concrete-breaking bombs, which are dropped from airplanes such as Boeing B-52.

"I cannot imagine how such aviation can appear in Ukraine and fight on the side of Ukraine. We cannot afford to fight in the way they fight.

So if we're sober and honest, crossing the line of February 24th last year will be incredibly difficult in military terms," Chernyk added.

At the same time, according to the expert, if the vertical of power in the Russian Federation begins to collapse by that time, stability in the management of the troops will deteriorate, and perhaps they will make a so-called "gesture of goodwill", as they once made this gesture on Zmiiny Island. Then, at the same time, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will calmly and confidently enter the city.

“However, the crumbling regime is a political moment. And if we abstract from political moments, even the Soviet army could not take the city head-on. Only when the Germans left, then the Soviet army entered," he said.

Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine has already announced the 12 steps of the de-occupation of Crimea. Among them are the eviction of Russian citizens who came there after 2014, the adoption of new legislation and the recognition of Russian legislation as invalid, as well as the demolition of the Kerch Bridge. Petro Chernyk 100% agrees with this plan.

"This is very competent. Especially in the part of the population. Everyone who has entered our territory since 2014, even if they are conditionally civilians, are starting to be considered exclusively as representatives of the occupying people and nothing more," Chernyk noted.
