Why does Putin need Ukrainians: a demographer-scientist reveals Russia's brutal policy

Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, believes that Russia needs citizens from Ukraine. Ukrainians in the occupied territories are mobilized and sent to the war against their own state. This is also how the Kremlin improves the demographic situation in the aggressor country.

The scientist said this in an interview with TSN.ua.

Oleksandr Hladun noted that in the occupied territories, Ukrainians are given Russian passports and mobilized into the occupying army.

"I've already mentioned that they partially mobilize people and send them to the war against Ukraine. And some people are taken to their own territory," he explained.

The demographer noted that the demographic situation in Russia is poor, and therefore, they have improved their statistics at the expense of Ukrainians.

"By doing this, the Russians are improving their demographic situation. In Russia, there are also processes of sharp population decline. Even before the start of large-scale invasion, mortality in Russia exceeded births. They pursued an active migration policy to attract "compatriots" to Russia, even offering certain financial compensations to those willing to move there from the former Soviet republics. On the other hand, there were migration flows abroad. Therefore, the demographic situation in Russia is far from normal, and Putin needs new people. The organized forced deportation of Ukrainians supports the population on the territory of the Russian Federation. And those who resist are either killed or simply used in this territory," Hladun explained.
