President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that it is time for a positive decision regarding the opening of negotiations for the country's membership in the European Union.

The Head of State made this statement during a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Kyiv on May 9.

Steps towards further integration between Ukraine and the EU were one of the topics discussed during Zelenskyy's meeting with von der Leyen.

"It is long overdue to eliminate the artificial political ambiguity in the relations between Ukraine and the European Union. It is time for a positive decision regarding the opening of negotiations for Ukraine's membership in the EU. Our values, security, well-being, and peace on the continent - all of this can be fully realized for Europe only together with Ukraine," the Head of State said.

He emphasized that Ukraine expects to receive a positive interim assessment from the European Commission in June regarding its progress towards European integration.

At the same time, von der Leyen noted that despite the difficulties of implementing reforms in the midst of the war, Ukraine is working tirelessly to implement the seven steps to start negotiations on EU membership.
