The Hungarian government plans to introduce new restrictions on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products to protect domestic farmers from market fluctuations.

This was announced by Minister of Agriculture of Hungary, István Nagy, according to the Associated Press.

According to him, the EU's decision to allow duty-free imports from Ukraine in 2022 to help sustain the country's economy after Russia's invasion has led to "significant oversupply and significantly lower prices" in the European agricultural market. The minister blamed the EU and its executive commission for failing to protect European farmers who could not compete with cheaper imports.

"Hungary will take additional protective measures within its national competence," István Nagy said.

According to him, the government has adopted a five-point plan to help farmers, including requiring sellers and logistics companies to report to the government prohibited products imported through Ukraine, regardless of country of origin.

According to the minister, products processed from Ukrainian grain will also be subject to restrictions.
