n his interview for CNN, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the President of Ukraine explained the utmost importance of the Donbas battle, the outcome of which may potentially affect the course of entire war with the Russian Federation.
"The Donbas battle is of utmost importance for us. It is important from various perspectives, and in particular, in terms of security of our military alignment stationed in Donbas. This is a large alignment, where some of our best troops are deployed. Russia has been long planning to surround and eliminate them. These are more than 40 thousand military personnel with extensive combat experience dating back to the previous war in 2014. Therefore, it is critical for us to preserve this part of our army, one of the most powerful alignments. And it’s very important to repel this attack, to stand through it. Because this battle (or maybe several battles, we don’t know who long it will last) may affect the course of the whole war”, Zelenskyi explained.
The President emphasized that he didn’t trust the Russian military and their leadership. He recalled how the Ukrainian defender drove the enemy troops away from Kyiv, Chernihiv and the Northern part of Ukraine.
However, according to Zelenskyi, it doesn't mean if they are able to capture Donbas, they won't come further towards Kyiv.
"This is the reason why the Donbas battle is so important for us. It’s essential to defeat them”, Zelenskyi reiterated.
