Attacking with naval drones has become more difficult: Navy Commander reports changes in Russian defense

Ukrainian forces must constantly stay "ahead of the enemy."

The layered defense system, established by Russia, has made it more challenging for Ukraine to carry out attacks using naval drones.

This was stated by Commander of the Ukrainian Navy, Oleksiy Neizhpapa, in an interview with the "Radio Svoboda Crimea.Realities" project.

"Once, we could easily enter Sevastopol Bay with drones; now, it’s not so simple. The enemy has created a layered defense system. It starts with a layered detection system — long-range, medium-range, and short-range zones for detecting our unmanned systems. Then comes the process of destroying them… And, of course, to overcome this, we need to make other decisions, primarily technical ones," Oleksiy Neizhpapa explained.

According to him, Ukrainian defenders must be more flexible, smarter, and always ahead in technological development.

"The drones that were simply kamikaze naval drones are now almost a thing of the past. Today, all naval drones must carry various types of weapons with different applications to be more effective and achieve success," Neizhpapa said.

Regarding analogs of such drones in Russia, the Navy Commander notes that the enemy forces "are trying to produce them" and have even had a few "successful" attempts.

"There have been a few applications, more or less successful. They are working on it. And we are also preparing to counter these drones and their potential use. Just as it was new for them during the land war back then, now, as you can see, it’s a war of drones. The same applies at sea: they are also preparing to do the same. So, we are preparing not only to use drones against the enemy ourselves but also to defend against them," Neizhpapa said.
