Blown Roofs and Shattered Windows: Consequences of Missile Strikes in Sarny, Rivne Region

The shock wave was so powerful that shattered windows of residential houses and hospitals, blew off building facades and even knocked down people. Four Russian missiles most likely launched from the territory of neighbor Belarus landed in Sarny community, as TSN.19:30 reported on August 29th.

The residents of Sarny community were terrified by powerful explosions and thick piles of smoke rising up to the skies. Ms. Maria was just on her way to the underground shelter in her basement.

"I just stepped in and then fell on the ground knocked down by the powerful shockwave”, the woman recalls.

The suffered knee and shoulder injuries, but considers herself luck enough for surviving the attack. There were so many explosions, that she didn’t even try to count them. The shockwave damaged at least 30 private cottages and an apartment block.

The district hospital is trying to fix the damage, after at least 80 window panes were shattered by the explosions. Luckily, the patients were not injured in the attack. Even before the Independence Day, the healthcare personnel decided to discharge all non-critical patients for out-patient treatment just in case.

"We had only critical patents left, who need required in-patient treatment. Almost all of them were evacuated to the shelters”, Oleksandr Nesterov, the Head of Sarny District Hospital, says.

"It was such a loud roar, that we couldn’t even understand where the missile landed. There was a feeling that everything happened so close, but no one was sure where exactly”, Oksana Pritasova, a local obstetrician-gynecologist, says.

All female patients with newborn babies were timely moved to the shelter.

Later the local authorities reported that the community was hit by several Russian missiles at the same time, but luckily there were no human casualties.

"We were attacked by four missiles. Some of them hit a military facility, while the rest landed on the other side of community”, Oleksandr Kokhan, the Head of Sarny District Administration, says.

The attack set on fire a strip of woodlands, which was quickly extinguished by the firefighters. The missile were most likely fired from Belarus adjacent to Sarny community.

"We clearly understand that the missile strike was launched from territory of the Republic of Belarus. This is an obvious fact. We have to cease any diplomatic relations with the Republic of Belarus", Ruslan Serpeninov, the Head of Sarny Community Administration, says.

Currently, the investigators continue to collect the evidence of war crimes under the opened criminal cases. The experts urge civilians to avoid the scenes of attack and not to touch any suspicious items.

Meanwhile, Sarny authorities estimate the damage caused by the missile strikes and promise to repair the buildings as soon as possible.
