Compensation for Ukraine's losses from the war: will the frozen Russian assets be enough for this?
The frozen Russian assets could serve as a source of funds necessary for Ukraine's resistance and recovery.
NBU Governor Andriy Pysnyy spoke about the possible use of Russian assets to compensate for the war losses
As of the end of 2023, the World Bank estimated Ukraine's losses inflicted by Russian aggression at $500 billion. Meanwhile, the amount of Russian assets frozen by the West since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine is around $300 billion. Thus, this amount would not be sufficient to compensate for all the losses and devastation caused by the aggressor country.
This was reported by Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, Andriy Pysnyy, on the air of the telethon “United News".
"The exact figure is never stated. It always comes with a certain range: 260-280-300, depending on the countries. But we can understand the general volume. It's about $300 billion," Pysnyy noted.
According to the Governor of the National Bank, the frozen Russian assets could become a source of covering the losses from the war – both existing and potential, as the war is still ongoing.
"We expect that these frozen Russian assets will be a source of the funds that will be needed by Ukraine for resistance and compensation," the regulator stated.
