Difficult but Right Decision: Aidar Veteran Tells Why It Is Important to Hold Bakhmut

Yevhen Dykyi, a veteran of the Aidar battalion, says it is a difficult but right decision for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to stay in Bakhmut, Donetsk Region, and continue to defend it. The Russians are basically sending their military to slaughter in the town.

This opinion was expressed by the former Aidar commander on the air of the FREEDOM TV channel.

According to him, more and more Russian units are becoming incapacitated after the battle for Bakhmut, and therefore do not support the offensive in other parts of the battlefield.

"They are all bound to this one small center of Bakhmut. When the time comes for our counteroffensive, it is not certain that the units that have passed Bakhmut will even be able to hold the line properly. It's a terrible meat grinder, but the enemy loses much more than we do," Dykyi says.

Dykyi insists that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are not surrendering Bakhmut, in particular, from a humanitarian point of view. After all, the town was practically wiped out during the fighting. However, there are still Siversk, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and Kostyantynivka.

"So far, these are living cities with functional infrastructures. There is a civilian population there. If we surrender Bakhmut, and I do not rule out that, unfortunately, it may still become necessary at some point. From a military point of view, not much will change. We will simply retreat to the next line of defense, which has been ready for a long time, and it will not be a collapse of the front, nor a breakthrough of the front. But from the humanitarian point of view, four cities from the rear will become the new battlefield as Bakhmut is now," Yevhen Dykyi stresses.
