Export of Ukrainian ore decreases by 23%

Export of iron ore by Ukrainian mining and metallurgy companies in June of 2022 has decreased by 23% in comparison to the previous month. The amount of exported metal totalled close to 1.75 million tonnes.

The deputy minister of economics of Ukraine Taras Kachka stated on his Facebook page that the export of iron ore exported by Ukrainian manufacturers has decreased 2.45 times compared to June of 2021.

In particular, between January and June of this year, Ukrainian metallurgy workers have exported 17 million tonnes of ore, which is 24.1% less than during the same period of last year.

In total, according to the export summary of the first half of the year, income from exports of Ukraine has fallen 23.7% when compared to the January-June period of 2021, totalling $22.8 billion. The second quarter of the year has seen a decrease of 37.4% compared to the first quarter, and by 45.8% when compared to the second quarter of 2021, bringing in $8.78 billion.

Thus, in terms of tonnes of export, the outflow of goods from Ukraine between January and June has decreased by 55.6%. Over the second quarter of 2022, 16.6 million tonnes of goods have been exported from the country.

Taras Kachka believes that the main cause of this is the blockade of Ukraine’s sea ports. In this way, the amount of cargo transported to Ukraine by sea has decreased by 86.5%, which equates to almost 21.6 million tonnes.

However, currently there is a positive trend in export in terms of both amount and total value of goods. Geographically, the EU is the main consumer of our exports. “78% of our exports in the second quarter of the year were to the EU. The total value of exports to these countries between April and June has been $6.86 billion, which is 6.4% greater than in the second quarter of 2021”, - summed up Kachka.

In the beginning of May, it became known that Ukraine would be exporting steel through the Romanian port of Constanta. The cargo operator Comvex has taken aboard close to 35 thousand tonnes of iron ore from Ukraine. Furthermore, Romania plans to begin repairs on the railway line which stretches from the port-town of Galați to the Moldavian village Giurgiulești and ties together the port of Reni in the south of the Odesa oblast with the rest of the Danube ports. This railway line will enable the export of Ukrainian goods through Moldova and the port of Galati.

We remind that the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine has supported the suggestion of the railway workers to conduct an indexation of tariffs, increasing them to 70% for all types of goods.
