Fifty countries participating in the IAEA’s 66th General Conference of issued a joint statement calling on Russia to immediately stop any actions that may interfere with operation of Ukrainian nuclear sites.
The joint statement was made by the leader of the Canadian delegation, as Enerhoatoms’ press service reports.
The signatories of the statement stressed that it was the seizure of the Zaporizhzhya NPP by Russian troops that was the root cause of Ukraine's threats to nuclear safety and physical protection. As for the plant itself, it must continue to operate, and certainly as part of the Ukraine's power grid.
"We remind that the risks of nuclear incidents will remain high as long as the Russian Federation is present at the Zaporizhzhya NPP site. The plant should remain connected to the Ukrainian power grid as an integral part of the Ukrainian energy system," the statement reads.
The participants of the conference also stressed that "any sham referendums held by the Russian Federation within the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine would have no legal or political impact on the status of the ZNPP or the territories around it".
The participants of the Conference called on Russia to stop endangering the whole world and noted that they "look forward" to the establishment of the nuclear safety and physical protection zone around ZNPP.
"We again call on the Russian Federation to immediately cease may hostile actions against and at nuclear facilities in Ukraine so that the Ukrainian competent authorities can regain full control over all nuclear facilities within Ukraine's internationally recognized borders to ensure their safe and secure operation, and so that the IAEA can safely carry out its safeguards verification activities in Ukraine to the full extent," the joint statement reads.
