Half Week at Home: Large-Scale Mine Clearance Operations Continue in Kherson, While Mass Graves Are Discovered in the Region

In Kherson recently liberated from Russian invaders, the mine clearance operations continue along with the search for collaborators and potential Russian subversive groups, so the city has been blocked is closed to entry and exit. According to local authorities, it will take at least a month to restore power supply alone.

TSN.ua has talked to law-enforcement officers, local residents and public authorities in the city.

"Mine clearance operations have been going on since the first hours after our military entered the city," the regional police press service told us.

Furthermore, Serhii Khlan, the Deputy of Kherson Regional Council, says it will take several weeks to restore power supply with the reference to estimates by the energy engineers.

"It will take at least a month to connect the power grid. Now there is a mobile tower in the city that provides mobile communications, but as far as we know, it, the communications, works only in the city downtown," Khlan told us.

Along with unexploded ordinance disposal, a search for mass graves is underway in the vicinity of Kherson and nearby settlements.

"No mass graves have been yet discovered in Kherson itself, but we have found some burial outside of the city. The scales will be reported later. The police investigators have already arrived in the city", our sources in the law-enforcement agencies said.

Meanwhile, the fate of Kherson City Mayor Ihor Kolykhaiev is yet unknown.

"According to the latest available reports, he is still in captivity. Most likely, he is kept by the Russian troops somewhere around Chaplynka. Furthermore, the former city mayor is also kept hostage by the enemy. The Russians have not yet publicly voiced any clear demands regarding these two individual," Kherson City Council officials told us.

Also, as we learned, most of the Kherson residents, who have left their home fleeing from Russian rule, now expect to return to the city before the New Year.

"These days we have spent some time discussing it with each other, I mean with other refugees. Those with young children, of course, will return there only when water supply and power supply are restored. Still, the others dream of returning sooner, as soon as access to the city is allowed. These people are ready to rush home. At the same time, local authorities have called for evacuation of those who live within reach of Russian artillery," one of the refugees told us.
