I ask Merkel to take a look at the consequences of appeasing Russia – Zelensky
The president added that the war crimes in Bucha will be the topic of discussion at the UN Security Council meeting on the 5th of April.
The president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that all of Ukraine’s partners will be notified about the details of the events in the temporarily occupied parts of our country. In particular, the war crimes in Bucha during the Russian occupation will be the topic of discussion at on the UN Security Council on Tuesday, the 5th of April.
The head of state announced this in his new video-address.
“There is sure to be a new pack of economic sanctions against Russia. But I am confident that sanctions are not enough. There need to be more consequences, not only for Russia, but also for the political actions which enabled this evil to come upon our land”, - said the leader of the country.
Zelensky added that the 3rd of April was the 14th anniversary of the NATO summit in Bucharest. That was the day on which – in his opinion – preventing the cruelty of Russia in Ukraine was possible.
“We had a chance to take Ukraine out of the “grey area” in Eastern Europe. Out of the “grey area” between NATO and Russia. Out of the “grey area” over which people in Moscow seem to think they have authority, even the authority to commit hideous war crimes. Back in 2008, under the guise of optimistic claims that Ukraine might be able to become a member of NATO, the Alliance hid a refusal to accept us. They hid an irrational fear of certain politicians before Russia. They thought that by refusing Ukraine, they might calm Russia down. They might convince Russia to respect Ukraine and live next to us like normal people. 14 years after this miscalculation, Ukraine has survived a revolution and eight years of war in the Donbass region. We are now fighting for survival in the worst war in Europe since the Second World War”, - pointed out the president.
Zelensky also invited Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy to visit Bucha and to see first-hand “what 14 years of bowing down before Russia has led to”.
“To see with their own eyes the tortured men and women of Ukraine. I want to be understood correctly – we are not blaming the West. We are not blaming anyone except for the particular Russian soldiers who have done this to our people, and those who gave them their orders to do so. But we have the right to talk about indecisiveness. About the path which led to Bucha, to Gostomel, to Kharkiv, to Mariupol. We don’t suffer from this indecisiveness. Whichever block or alliance we are or are not part of, we realise one truth: we have to be strong”, - he added.
The country’s leader has also reminded that, fourteen years ago, the head of the Russian delegation in Bucharest was trying to prove to Western leaders that Ukraine is not a country. But we have since proved – added Zelensky – that Ukraine is, always has been and always will be, and does not need to plead with or hide from anyone.
“In an ideal world, we would not have needed to ask for weapons to protect ourselves from the evil which came to our land. All the necessary armaments should have been given to us without our having to ask. Because everyone realises the nature of this evil and what it brings with it. And we see what is at stake in this war. And we see what it is that we are defending”, - stated Volodymyr Zelensky.
