"IAEA Missions Is Not the Only Measure Required": Podoliak Explained What Steps Should Be Taken in Respect of ZNPP

The IAEA has yet to supply Ukraine with a detailed engineering nuclear report following its visit to ZNPP, as Mykhailo Podoliak, the Adviser to the Head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office said.

"We haven’t seen any of that in the report. It’s more important for IAEA to conduct a proper technical, engineering audit of ZNPP – as opposed to a peacekeeping mission", Podoliak stressed.

Commenting on the IAEA initiative to set up permanent presence of its experts at the ZNPP, he also noted that, despite the above, such presence at the nuclear plant might help protect Ukrainian personnel from armed invaders.

"That’s because those Russian troops there have no clue about what is happening there so they can’t assess the risks correctly. But there are a certain number of our staffers who need some kind of protection, so that someone from the international community stands by their side – some inspectors who will say ‘don't touch these people, let them do their job.’ This would be important", he added.

According to him, the nuclear power plant needs nuclear physicists, process engineers and other qualified professional to stay along there with Ukrainian personnel. This is especially essential, since the invaders are actively using multiple rocket-launching systems next to the plant.
