"It's time to stop making excuses": Kuleba appealed to NATO regarding Ukraine's accession

The countries of the North Atlantic Alliance should stop looking for excuses and admit that there is no alternative to accepting Ukraine into the Alliance.

This was stated by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, in an article for Foreign Affairs, writes UNIAN.

"It is time to stop making excuses and finally admit that there is no alternative to accepting Ukraine if NATO's goal is to ensure the security of the Euro-Atlantic community. I do not question NATO's current commitment to Ukraine. Allies have provided vital assistance to Kyiv since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion. But I question NATO's strategy when it comes to Ukraine and the long-term security of the Euro-Atlantic region," Kuleba writes.

The Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that NATO's cautious strategy towards Russia had terrible consequences.

"Fear overshadowed the Alliance's prudence, forcing it to adopt an over-caution strategy that had severe consequences for thousands of Ukrainians who were kidnapped, raped, tortured, displaced, or killed. NATO's strategic mistake also allowed Russia to undermine the security of the West through cyber attacks, espionage, and political interference," Kuleba adds.

"In Europe, the same objection was raised by those who seek to block Ukraine's path to membership in the European Union. A little more than a year ago, we were informed that the EU was divided over the question of whether to grant Ukraine candidate status. However, in June 2022, all 27 countries - EU members supported the granting of this status to Ukraine, which gave the bloc a new sense of unity, purpose and strength. The same will happen to NATO when a decision is made regarding Ukraine's path to membership," Minister for Foreign Affairs emphasized.

Kuleba calls on NATO leaders to take a bold decision that will have a significant impact on the security situation in the region.

"The current leaders of NATO countries did not make the wrong decisions that brought us here, but they can make a bold decision to expand the alliance and thus protect the Euro-Atlantic. If Ukraine is left open, it will only lead to further instability and Russian aggression," he emphasizes.
