Scholz Announced that Greece Would Supply Its Soviet-Era Military Hardware to Ukraine: the Only Thing Is that Greece Has No Soviet Tanks
Oleksii Arestovych and Mykhailo Samus, the military experts, shared their comments regarding the recent statement by the Chancellor of Germany regarding a new deal, where Greece would supply its Soviet-era military hardware to Ukraine in exchange for more modern German systems.
During his briefing in Brussels, Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, announced a new deal with Greece, where the latter would supply its Soviet-era tanks to Ukraine in exchange for more modern armor provided by Berlin.
In response Scholz’s announcement, Oleksii Arestovych, the Adviser to the Head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, noted that Greece has never owned Soviet-era tanks. Arestovych shared his comments during a conversation with Mark Feigin, the Russian journalist and human rights advocate.
“The problem is that Greece does not have any Soviet-era tanks in its arsenal. They have some AMPVs. I guess Cyprus should have some (Soviet-era tanks – ed.), but it’s a very difficult story. The President (of Poland – ed.) Mr. Duda says: “we have supplied at least 200 tanks to Ukraine, and the German government promised to replace them with Leopards”. Although, they haven’t delivered any Leopards yet”, Arestovych said.
Still, the Ukraine’s Presidential Office representative acknowledged significant support provided to Ukraine by Germany, while the heavy weapon supplies “being a quite different story”.
Meanwhile, Mykhailo Samus, the military expert, also confirmed that Greece did not have any T-80 tanks, mentioned by Scholz, in its arsenal.
“This story with German weapon for Ukraine is kind of cursed. Actually, the Cyprus National Guard has T-80U tanks, BMP-3 AMPVs, Mi-35 helicopters, Tor-M1 and Buk-1M ADMSs in its arsenal. Although, Mr. Scholz is the only person, who can really explain what kind of deal the Germany has reached and with whom. I really hope that it’s not about supply of 80 tons of walnuts or something, because we need those tanks, Mr Scholz”, Samus posted on Facebook.
