“Second only to nomadic tribes”: Major-general talks about Russian atrocities in Chernihiv

Chernihiv is one of the first cities which, on the 24th of February 2022, took the brunt of the blow of the Russian invasion. The invaders ruined towns and villages of the oblast and killed thousands of civilians, but Chernihiv stood.

A defender of Chernihiv, the Hero of Ukraine major-general Viktor Nikolyuk talked about the “second-best army in the world”, about their losses and about the treatment of the Russian soldiers by their higher leadership.

“No-one expected that, in the 21st century, area bombing and rocked bombardments would still exist. Even full-scale war was not really something which seemed reasonable… Subconsciously, no-one expected this. No-one could have thought that someone out there was insane enough to attack the civilian population”, - he stated.

In the battle for Chernihiv, 45-50% of the Russian personnel was destroyed.

According to the general, in the morning of February the 24th, the fighting began suddenly with the crossing of the Ukrainian national border by the enemy. But everything began with air strikes against the places where the army of Ukraine held its permanent positions.

Viktor Nikolyuk also stated that mobile crematoriums operated in villages around Chernihiv to dispose of the dead Russians. When they were fleeing, the Russians simply abandoned their dead troops.

“This has shown that the Russian army is not the “world’s second strongest”. It’s more like the 102nd or the 402nd. I think that – without trying to offend anyone – their rightful place is after native nomadic tribes”, - he stated.

He also pointed out that the Russian higher command treats their troops like “ a mass, like livestock”. There will always be a replacement for anyone who dies.

We remind that, in the Chernihiv oblast, 8 Russian soldiers and their commander drowned attempting to set up a pontoon bridge.
