“They attack ambulances and drop bombs from drones": doctors report on Putin's army atrocities in Kherson
TSN spoke with doctors from Kherson.
The work of medics in Kherson
Russian occupiers continue mercilessly shelling Kherson. During one of the latest attacks, 7 people were injured. They are being rescued by medics.
This is stated in the story of TSN correspondent Alla Khotsyanivska.
How medics in Kherson save people during shelling
In Kherson, medics are constantly rescuing people injured by Russian shelling and are themselves constantly in danger.
The TSN film crew captured how doctors are saving 47-year-old Andriy during a shelling. He and his colleague were driving on business. Together with a colleague, they went on business. Andriy was driving when the explosions rang out.
Later, the medics examine the man again - the fragments hit both of his shins. Serhiy, Andriy's colleague, was not affected. He says that there were three hits nearby, and a little further he heard six more explosions.
There is a shortage of doctors in Kherson
Emergency medicine doctor Olena Paikova says that she has to work like this almost every day. She admits that she fears for her life, but continues to save people.
Olena Paikova
Olena Paikova notes that the war forced the emergency aid brigades to actually be on combat alert. Medics do not go on any call without body armor. At any moment, Russian forces could shell the city again.
Olena returned to Kherson almost immediately after the deoccupation because she couldn't leave her colleagues alone.
Paramedic Hryhoriy is from the occupied left bank of Kherson. He traveled across all of Europe to return to Ukrainian-controlled territory and continue saving people.
Medics in Kherson
Due to active hostilities, almost half of the medical personnel left. They are currently experiencing a severe shortage of staff. Teams are working at one and a half times their capacity, but they still need more hands, so they are bringing in medical professionals from other regions for reinforcements. Today is the second time a team from Sumy is working here.
"I wanted to work right here. To see what it's like here, to talk to local doctors, how they work, because you don't know what will happen tomorrow. You have to be ready for everything," says Pavlo Dzyuba, a doctor of emergency medicine at the Sumy Emergency Medical Center.
The occupiers deliberately fire at "ambulances”
During active hostilities in the Kherson region, the driver of an "ambulance" was killed and five more medics were injured. Two of them are in Beryslav this month.
Halyna Saldan, Acting Director of the Regional Territorial Center for Emergency Medical Aid and Disaster Medicine of the Kherson Region, says that the occupiers often fire at doctors and hospitals.
"They hit ambulances, track them and even drop bombs from drones," she says.
During a conversation with TSN journalists, explosions rang out near the medical facility. And the medics went to save people again.
