"This Cannot Be Left Unanswered": Ambassador Spoke about Consultations in Hague on Punishing Russia for Aggression against Ukraine

The Hague has hosted consultations on the creation of a special tribunal to hold Russia accountable for its aggression against Ukraine, as Ambassador-at-Large of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Anton Korinevych said in his commentary for Ukrinform.

According to him, representatives of the Dutch Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Justice, as well as criminal law experts took part in the substantive consultations

"We worked in the Hague. In fact, it was another consultation with our Dutch partners. We were discussing various issues, in particular the liability for the crime of aggression against Ukraine, the possibility of certain actions within the UN General Assembly, the creation of a special tribunal, how to strengthen and internationalize the national investigation and prosecution for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. All these issues are in the work they are discussing," he said.

According to Korinevych, the parties agreed on “next steps to finding better opportunities both for creating a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine and for strengthening the internationalization of the national investigation into the crime of aggression against Ukraine," as a result of the consultations.

The Ambassador-at-Large stressed that the crime of Russian aggression against Ukraine is "the most obvious crime since World War II."

"We cannot leave this crime of aggression against Ukraine unanswered, because then it would mean that any dictator can do such things, ever, knowing that he will not be held accountable for it, but will be limited to the responsibility of the average commander for committing war crimes or crimes against humanity," he stressed.
