Trump may pursue an unfavorable peace agreement for Ukraine: Portnikov’s concerning statement
The journalist emphasizes that Ukraine's ambitious task is to explain to Trump that peace on Putin's terms would not only be a catastrophe for the country but also a disgrace for the White House and its new leader.

Given the current approach to peace negotiations in the Middle East, it is possible that the administration of the newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump may opt for a peace deal with Russia that would be unfavorable for Ukraine. This opinion was expressed by Ukrainian journalist Vitaly Portnikov during a broadcast on his YouTube channel.
Portnikov explained why Trump might consider a peace agreement that is disadvantageous for Ukraine. "The way the peace agreement is currently being handled in the Middle East creates the impression that, in order to soothe Donald Trump’s ego, the White House may agree to terms that will be unfavorable for our country. If the deal with Hamas is disadvantageous for Israel – and this is something many observers are saying today – and if Donald Trump seemed more interested in Israel's security than in Ukraine's security, the question arises of how the new American administration will act on the Ukrainian issue. If saving the face of the current U.S. President and the speed of decision-making are considered much more important than achieving sustainable peace in crisis regions," the journalist explained.
He also noted that the issue isn’t just about Trump’s position in potential negotiations and meetings with Russian president Volodymyr Putin.
"The question is how such conditions proposed by the Russian president will be perceived by the Ukrainian leadership, the public, and ultimately the Europeans. There may be a situation where the Americans don't see anything tragic in such proposals from the U.S. President. However, in Kyiv and European capitals, they will fully understand that they are dealing with a delayed war and a political reconfiguration of Ukraine that will not allow any hope for its independent, sovereign development in the future," Portnikov said.
He added that much will depend on Trump, but also a lot will depend on Ukraine.
The journalist expressed the conviction that Ukraine will not be able to achieve any real compromises with Russia.
"The first thing to realize is that we won’t achieve any real compromises with Putin, because the Russian president is convinced he can impose his peace terms on Ukraine, which so far look exclusively like terms of capitulation. What Volodymyr Putin is really thinking about is how to use the new American President's desire to appear as some kind of peacemaker to enforce these de facto conditions of capitulation," Portnikov stated.
In this context, he emphasized that Ukraine’s ambitious task is to explain to the new U.S. administration and Trump himself that peace on Putin's terms would not only be a catastrophe for Ukraine but also a disgrace for the White House and its new leader.
