We Need “Green Motorway Corridors” in Order to Increase Grain Export – People’s Deputy
Due to the war and the port blockade, Ukrainian grains has been exported through overland routes since March.
In order to increase export volumes, it’s necessary to make agreements with European governments and create green motorway routes, as it was made for petrol tank vehicles.
This opinion was expressed by Ivan Chaikivskyi, the People’s Deputy from “For the Future” political party and the Secretary of Agricultural Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
"Due to the aggression and the blockade of the Black Sea ports, which we had used to export around 95%-98% of our grain, today we have to look for new logistic chains. These are motorway and railway routes, as well as our Danube river ports, where Europe dispatches its grain bulker vessels. Ukrainian grain has been exported using new routes since March, and our capacities are growing month after month. If in March we exported only 300 thousand tons of grain, then in April it was 800 thousand tons of grain, while in May this figure exceeded 1 million 750 thousand tons of grain. According to export estimates, today Ukraine is capable to export around 2,5 million tons of grain per month. To put in context, before the war our monthly export capabilities though the Black Sea ports varied between 6 and 8 million tons of grain. Therefore, today we are facing significant risks of deficiency of storage capacities for grain, corn, sunflower and other crops during the harvest period. It means that we should look for new ways to increase export of our agricultural products”, the People’s Deputy noted.
According to him, increase of railway export volume requires additional investments for retrofitting of Ukrainian railway cars to match the European railway tracks which are different from Ukrainian railway system. This will consequently result in increase of grain cost of sale. That’s the reason why Ivan Chaikivskyi offers to make agreements with European governments and create green motorway routes for food export.
"Last week, our government signed an agreement with other countries on creation of “green corridors” for our fuel tank vehicles, which haul fuel from Europe to Ukraine. If we create these green corridors for Ukrainian motorways, we will increase the volume of our grain export. Together with other People’s Deputies we will bring forward this proposal before our government and our President”, Ivan Chaikivskyi said.
